Condesa Del Mar
Condesa Del Mar is owned by Jenny and Mark Gaskell
Condesa is a Herreshoff Schooner, 73 feet long, made from ferrocrete, cement ,and weighing 42 tons!! She was built in 1970, but not finished until 1990.
Going on board is to step back to a bygone age where everything has been crafted with love and care. The décor is inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, with beautiful wood panelling, lead light glass cabinetry and light shades. The saloon is dark, but judicious use of mirrors makes it a cosy retreat.
Silver candlesticks, cut glass and candles reflect the light and add to the ambience. The luxurious ambience is further enhanced by the rich, ruby velvet settee upholstery.
The master cabin is in the stern, with an ensuite. Large hatches give plenty of airflow throughout
Condesa can sleep ten people, several of the bunks convert from single to double when needed, saving on space. There are two lounges, so Jenny and Mark can have their privacy.
The spacious galley has wood doors and a white work surface.
The couple saw the boat for sale, but had to wait many years before she was on the market. They bought her in La Paz, Mexico and sailed across the Pacific via Tahiti, Bora Bora, the Solomons and Fiji, to name just a few of the stops on the way home.
They had Pedro, from Mexico, to help them crew the boat, who was indispensible.
The journey was an amazing adventure, with Condesa proving how sea worthy she was, cruising at around 8 knots with all her sails up. The only miss hap was hitting a reef, well she does draw 9 foot, and reefs are tricky!! Luckily as she is so solid no damage was done to the boat, though not the same can be said for the reef!!
Next year they are intending to sail around the top of Australia to Darwin, and maybe further.
Mark is a famous cricketer who took over the family sporting goods business, which he is in the process of stepping back from to hand over to the couple’s two sons.
Jenny had her own successful marketing company in Brisbane.
They are a delightful and vivacious couple living the dream on a unique boat, which they have made into an elegant home. We are looking forward to meeting them again soon.
